A general snapshot of optometry for new grads in Canada

Abstract

This study surveyed new optometrists in Canada who graduated between 2013 and 2021 to gain insight into their career experiences, expectations, and goals. 342 respondents shared information on their income, practice modality, overall job satisfaction and future goals. The national average income was $119, 940. For more established ODs graduating between 2013 and 2019, the national average income is $136,998. The average debt of a Canadian graduate was $93,550 and for an American graduate was $201,550. The majority of new optometrists practice in group private practices.

When deciding where to practice, the top 3 most influential factors were income, work/life balance and family/friends. The majority of new optometrists feel that the pandemic did not change their career goals. When asked about ownership goals, the majority of new optometrists were unlikely to cold-start. There is a higher interest to buy-in or partner with an existing owner. Over 96% of new graduates are members of their association. The majority of new graduates report satisfaction with their work/life balance in optometry.
